Howe Coach In Texas Hall of Honor

Howe Enterprise - 1982

L.B. Morris, who coached football in Howe and led his first team to a District Title, will be inducted into the Hall of Honor of the Texas High School Coaches Association in a Houston ceremony July 23, 1982. Morris graduated from North Texas State University and had his first job at Howe in 1936, the second year a Howe football team played ball. That team of 1936 won the first District Title for Howe.

From Howe, Morris went to Whitewright, Gainesville and then spent 18 years coaching in Fort Worth. he coached football and basketball for 7 years and track and field for 19 years with track. Also during this time three world records were set under his coaching, in shot, discus, and two-mile relay. He was the originator of the Will Rogers Indoor Games in Fort Worth.

Morris is married to the former Lura McKelva of the Bonham area.

A picture of the 1936 Bulldogs was published in the Howe Enterprise June 26, 1975. Members of that winning team were: Glynn Hestand, Albert Harrison, Jay Randell Bryant, Emerson Bates, Dwayne Wood, Charles A. Barnett, Robert Francis, Carl Bearden, Billy Bryant Cloud, Leroy "Mutt" Wiggins, Melvin Powell, Delbert McCraw, J.L. Ashlock, James Gee, James Patterson, Everett Hood, Fred Davis, Max Mitchell, Claud Fincher, Roamer Carter, Douglas Murley, Harold Carter, and Shelley Camp.
